One of the questions we get asked most at the London Ceilidh Club is where to hire a kilt in London. Whether it’s for a wedding, Burns Night or your first ceilidh, here’s our up-to-date guide to kilt hire in London: where to go, what it costs and what you get.

How much does kilt hire cost in London?

A full kilt outfit usually costs between £80 and £170 to hire for a few days. The price depends on the jacket style and the tartan. A simple ghillie shirt outfit is at the cheaper end, a Prince Charlie or Argyll jacket outfit sits in the middle, and a rare or custom tartan costs more.

A full hire outfit normally includes:

• the kilt and kilt pin
• a jacket and waistcoat (or a ghillie shirt)
• a sporran, belt and buckle
• kilt socks (hose) and flashes
• a sgian dubh, the small knife worn in the sock
• ghillie brogues

Shirts and socks are often sold to you rather than hired, so check what’s included in the price.

Tips for hiring a kilt

• Book early. Burns Night (late January) and the summer wedding season are the busiest times, and popular sizes and tartans go first.
• Get measured properly. A kilt should sit on your natural waist, above the hips, with the hem at the middle of the knee.
• Choose your tartan. If you don’t have a family tartan, universal tartans such as Black Watch, Pride of Scotland or Flower of Scotland can be worn by anyone.
• Check the dates. Most hires run for three to five days. Find out when it arrives, when it goes back and what late returns cost.
• Read the damage policy. Ceilidh dancing is energetic, so make sure you know what’s covered.

Can I wear a kilt to a ceilidh?

Absolutely. Kilts are made for dancing, and a kilt spinning through Strip the Willow is a sight to behold. But you don’t need one.
